Programme Info

The Diploma in Medical Assistant is an undergraduate academic programme aimed at providing students with the knowledge, skills and attitude to enable them to practice as Assistant Medical Officers (AMO), as they are currently known. Upon graduating the programme, the graduates would be able to use the knowledge and skills gained to render curative, promotive, preventive and rehabilitative services at suitable levels under the supervision of the Medical Officer.

As an AMO, they will function in the following areas:

i. Pre-Hospital Setting – Health Clinics AMO renders primary and emergency treatment, examine, diagnose and treat minor illness. They also provide counselling and health education to patients and communities.

ii. Hospital Setting 
The AMO plays a major role in running the emergency department giving initial treatment in emergency cases. He also manages outpatient clinics and does triaging. Besides these, he is also involved in manning the various specialists units such as Orthopaedic Clinic, Neurology Clinic, Intensive Care Unit and etc.

AMO training program is supervised by the Board of Medical Assistants formed under Act 180, Malaysian Medical Assistant Act and its implementation is conducted by the Malaysia Ministry of Health and private colleges which are authorized to conduct such programs. This training programme is subjected to the Medical Assistant Rules (amended) 1998.
